| Title: |
Ný Batterí (Sigur Rós cover) |
| Artist: |
Wailing Miserere
|
| Description: |
In Icelandic, scarily enough...
|
| Notes: |
The lyrics to this song just make my hair stand on end. There is something quite eerie hearing someone sing about such brutal and stark images in a language as pure and ancient as Icelandic.
There are translations for this all over the net, however I changed little bits here and there. The one part I have translated differently is 'aftur á bak þar sem við ríðum.' Almost every translation I have seen has this as 'once again in the back where we ride.' I have been told that the verb meaning 'to ride' is very commonly used as a slang word for sex in Icelandic... hence my rather unsubtle translation .
Interestingly, I saw Sigur Rós live recently, and Jonsi changed the last five lines, singing in the meaningless sound he often adopts. Apparently he has done this on other live performances of the song, too. I can only guess that his feelings regarding those lines have changed in the several years since he wrote this song.
Recorded in Edinburgh University Studio 2, November 2005

'New Batteries'
Barbwire stapled in my bleeding mouth
Locked up in a cage
Naked animals beat me
And a Saviour knocks
An Untamed one inserts new batteries
And recharges again
Recharges again
Recharges again
Recharges again
We set off into the unknown
Until we have destroyed all and are dominant
Once again
Once again
Once again
Back again where we fuck
The barbwire returns
Ripping up a long-healed wound
My soul has grown rusty
The electricity has gone
I want to cut and carve myself to death
But lacking the courage
Shut myself off instead
Alone again
